Improving Gut Health using Probiotics
Never ignore your gut feeling, they say; never ignore your gut is what we say!
Gut health is instrumental in raising the overall immunity and wellbeing of a human being, both mental and physical. There exists a whole ecosystem consisting of microorganisms inside our digestive tract, called a ‘gut microbiome’ or ‘gut flora’, responsible for diverse functions. A diverse microbiome, hence, is necessary for the sound functioning of the human body and mind.
A healthy lifestyle consisting of a rich balanced diet of different food types can help augment a diverse microbiome. Needless to say, fresh green vegetables and fruits bring the right mix of nutrients needed to boost gut health. They are high in fibers, which can be digested by only certain kinds of bacteria in the gut.
Probiotics health are live microorganisms, yeast or bacteria, that keep the gut healthy. They are also called the ‘good bacteria’ or ‘helpful bacteria’.
Some of the gut-friendly probiotic food options include:
1. Fruits like raspberries, artichokes, blueberries, apples, bananas, almonds, pistachios, etc.
2. Vegetables like beans, legumes, green peas, broccoli, etc.
3. Other food like Dhokla, Idli, chickpeas, lentils, whole grains, soy milk, dark chocolate, etc.
Probiotic food is the food upon which the probiotics feed, thus, it fosters the growth of beneficial bacteria like the Bifidobacteria in the gut. Some of the prebiotic food options include asparagus, bananas, chicory, garlic, Jerusalem artichokes, onions, whole grains, etc.
Sugar and sweeteners, including artificial sweeteners, cause disharmony in the gut microbiome. Fermentation is the process in which sugars are broken down by yeast or bacteria. This is where the fermented food comes to the aid. It improves the overall functioning of the microbiome.
Some of the examples of fermented food include plain yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, kombucha, tempeh, etc.
There is an interesting observation that children who’re breastfed for a minimum of six months properly have a healthier gut microbiome in comparison to those who were fed formula. Breastfeeding is known to bless with many health benefits like lower rates of allergy, obesity, etc. Hence, it’s important to start right from the beginning.
Overall, a healthy lifestyle with a fiber-rich vegetarian diet accompanied by regular exercise, proper sleep routine, stress-free living, environment, etc. Is the essential component to keep your gut microbiome in a balanced state for high immunity and quality of life.
So, keep your gut clean to trust your gut again!
